Guntala Ooru transformed into Guntur.
One of the rarest cities with a history dating from Treta Yuga to Buddhism practice is none other than Guntur. Agasteswara Shiva temple dates back to the days of Sri Rama and the first Kalachakra ceremony performed by Gautama Buddha himself at Guntur only. The name of the city was derived from the usage of ‘Guntala Ooru’ in Telugu, which can be translated as ‘Village of Ponds’. Coming to physical evidence, the stone inscription in Agasteswara temple reveals the 1100 Christian Era that was located in Old Guntur and considered the most famous temple in that area. Caves situated at Sitanagaram and Guthi Konda are said to have existed in Dwapara Yuga during the time of Maha Bharat.
District Headquarter to State Capital
Guntur was given district status in 1904, merged into Ongole district in 1970, and once again formed as a whole district in 1977, which it has continued to do to date. When Andhra Pradesh became the residual part of the bifurcation in 2014, Amravati was named as the new capital of AP on this district’s border with Vijayawada. This will remain the legislative capital of AP even if the ‘3 Capitals’ issue materializes.
Farm Products, Educational Institutes
Several Mirchi yards with temperature control facilities can be seen on the outskirts of the city. Agriculture Market Committee Market Yard, the largest chilly yard in Asia, generates an income of up to ₹100 crore during trading season. The spiciest Guntur chilies are exported to foreign countries, and the city stands second in terms of trade, next to Mexico. The Central Tobacco Board was set up here to oversee the quality of produce in the district. Agriculture University, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur Medical College, and Hindu Colleges are some of the prestigious educational institutes in the district. AIIMS is sanctioned as part of the state bifurcation package with the central aid at Mangalagiri, which is part and parcel of the capital region development area of Andhra Pradesh.
