Sri Potti, Sri Ramulu Nellore
The only city in southern coastal Andhra Pradesh ruled by Emperor Ashoka on the banks of the River Penna with the name Vikram Simhapuri is none other than Nellore. The name of the person who sacrificed himself for obtaining a separate state for Telugu, Potti Sri Ramulu, was added before Nellore in Andhra Pradesh government records. As this is very nearer to Tamil Nadu, the name of the district was drawn from the word Nelli Tree, which means Shiv Ling in the form of a tree (in Tamil, Nelli means tree). After Mauryas, Ganga, Kalinga, Pallava, Chola, Kakatiya, Vijayanagara Kings (Karnataka), and Nawabs ruled Nellore before the East India Company as they leased this area to Zamindars from various families.
Space Port, Sea Port
Sri Hari Kota, from where India sends rockets to space, attracts many tourists and bags pride by sending satellites from other nations, including both private and government-owned ones. This state-of-the-art facility is maintained by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and is the main base for India’s space flight programs. Krishnapatnam is a major port and market center situated at a distance of 24 km from Nellore City. It remains one of the very few ports in the world that can handle giant ships with load capacities of 1,50,000 tons.
Mahatma Gandhi’s Visit
The Pinakini Satyagraha Ashram made a significant contribution to the National Freedom Struggle led by Gandhiji. The Ashram, known as Pallipadu Gandhi Ashram, is one of its kind in Andhra Pradesh and stands second only to Gandhiji’s Ashram at Sabarmati at the national level. The Ashram was inaugurated on February 7, 1921, by Gandhiji himself. Venkatagiri sarees were mostly weaved for royal women. Now, the village has become a famous name for its history and handlooms. These sarees weaved in the Jamdari technique are also registered as one of the geographical indications from Andhra Pradesh.
