Vizianagaram is often confused with the kingdom in Karnataka state that was ruled by Sri Krishna Devarya, who promoted Telugu as sweet as honey. But Vizianagaram, which we are talking about, is part of North Andhra Pradesh in the state of Andhra Pradesh. Vizianagaram was ruled by Kharavela, the king of the Kalinga Dynasty, and after him, other dynasties such as Chola and Ganga also ruled. Vizianagaram kings defeated the last Gajapathi king in a battle and started adding that dynasty name after their names.

The famous Bobbili Battle took place between the Vizianagaram Kings and the Bobbili Kings when French military head Bussy captured Bobbili Fort with the alleged help of Gajapathis. After that, the British invaded Vizianagaram, and from then on, it became a princely state. The last king in the Gajapati dynasty was PVG Raju, who merged his kingdom in India without accepting the Pervy Purse that was offered by the Independent Indian Government.

Vizianagaram District was formed as the 23rd district in the state on June 1, 1979, with headquarters at Vizianagaram and portions carved from Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam Districts. The district was formed with 9 taluks, viz., Vizianagaram, Gajapathinagaram, Srungavarapukota, and Bhogapuram taluks from Visakhapatnam district, Bobbili, Parvathipuram, Saluru, Kurupam, and Cheepurupalli from Srikakulam district.

Though Vizianagaram is a smaller district when compared with many others, it has a diverse geographical presence. Several rivers pass through Vizianagaram, and deep forests can be seen here. Pydithalli Ammavari Jatara (Festival of Mother Pydithalli), which was also popularly known as ‘Siri Manotsav', is a mass festival where a Hindu priest mounts on a long tree trunk and blesses the public as the agent of Goddess Pydithalli. Eminent Telugu singers Ghantasala Venkateswar Rao and Susheela emerged from Vizianagaram Music College. The doyen of Hari Katha (Story of Lord Hari), Ajjada Adibhatla Narayana Das, was a native of Vizianagaram.
